Music & Art
Kindergarten music classes are focused on reinforcing ideas learned in other areas of study. For instance, helping students remember the months of the year through song.
The first grade is becoming well acquainted with various composers, such as Beethoven, Mozart and Brahams. As they learn about these composers, they are also becoming familiar with different music genres.
Second grade is learning about all the instrument families and instruments. We have discussed brass and are nearly finished with woodwinds. Strings and percussion are soon to follow.
Our third grade class is learning basic music theory. They have nearly mastered treble staff notation. They will soon begin working on rhythmic notation and then joining both topics.
The fourth grade is currently learning to use lummi sticks, a complex form of rhythmic performance and chant with a partner or group. We are hoping to move onto tinikling poles within a few weeks.
In coordination with their social studies curriculum, the fifth grade is learning the music of the American colonies. They are having the opportunity to not only experience a different genre, but they also enjoy modernizing the songs to fit today's socity.
The sixth grade is enjoying a musical accompaniment to their social studies curriculum. As they learn about the different countries of the world, they also learn native music and traditional dances of the country.
Seventh grade is beginning to learn complex rhythmic notation. As their skills increase, they will be learning pieces for body percussion, such as 'groove center' moving up to pieces like 'Symphony for 7 Rulers'.
The eighth grade class is complementing their social studies curriculum by individually exploring the jazz greats. The students are required to research and present information about the lives of legends such as Billie Holiday, Jimmy Dorsey, and Ella Fitzgerald.
